RESPONSE TO EPIC GAMES LAYOFFS

Source: Layoffs at Epic (via Epic Games)

Layoffs in the gaming industry happen way too often, and today's hit especially hard. Working closely with Fortnite and the ecosystem Epic Games is creating, and having had the pleasure of discussing Fortnite with Epic employees, it is heartbreaking to see 11% of the workforce laid off today.

The Fortnite Team has been undoubtedly impacted by today's layoffs. As changes within the game come and go, it is important that players understand that these changes do not come from a developer's laziness or lack of care. Instead, it reflects the absence of key team members who are now without a job and at risk.

The creative team behind Fortnite has always been one of its key strengths, it is more than clear that some of the most talented designers, programmers, artists, and more are working on Fortnite. The impact of these talented individuals cannot be overstated.

Many developers, like myself and my peers, enjoy and consume the game, so jokes at their expense are tasteless and unwarranted. Please be respectful, these people work endlessly hard to create the game we love, and being abusive to them on Twitter is evil.

The guilt I feel as a Fortnite developer receiving payouts from Epic is insurmountable. It's like a form of survivor's guilt; why do I get to keep making money when the hardworking, talented people I look up to at Epic Games have just lost their livelihood. It doesn't feel right.

There were other ways to make Epic financially successful again without layoffs - especially one so devastating. I do not speak for every creator in the Fortnite ecosystem, but I would absolutely accept a lower payout if it meant those employees kept their jobs. It's so, so very wrong.

My sympathies extend to those affected and to those who have lost valuable teammates and friends. Thank you all for your invaluable contributions to the game we all love, and best of luck. 💙
